From the By-Laws of the Company, Article III Section III, Sub-Section (E):

E.M.S. Captain - shall be responsible to the Fire Chief for the direction of emergency medical service personnel at emergencies; shall maintain the proficiency of E.M.S. personnel through training and drills; and shall keep all pertinent records.

It is the responsibility of the E.M.S. Captain to see that these duties are fulfilled throughout the year.

The ambulance shall:

  • be prepared to respond at all times;
  • have all equipment clean, neat, and stored in its proper place;
  • be checked after each call to ensure that the vehicle is ready for the next call; and
  • be kept clean inside and outside.

In addition, you shall:

  • Plan and command at least twenty-four hours of drills per year, eight hours of which must be on the truck;
  • Be responsible for training all Members in the operation and general knowledge of the truck, and to ensure that your assigned Lieutenant (if any) is trained and prepared to assume your position, in the event of your absence;
  • Complete a monthly vehicle inspection report, and submit to the Chief no later than the current month's Line Officers' meeting;
  • Keep your truck bay clean, including the glass overhead doors;
  • Immediately report to any Chief officer on any equipment that is missing or damaged;
  • Immediately report to any Chief officer on any mechanical problem;
  • Prepare a list of items desired ("Wish List"), and submit to the Chief no later than March 1st of each year; and
  • Prepare an inventory of equipment on his/her truck, and submit to the Chief no later than March 1st of each year.

If the E.M.S. Captain experiences resistance or other difficulty in obtaining the cooperation and/or support of any Member, it is to be reported to a chief immediately.

Failure to fulfill these duties may result in the removal of a the E.M.S. Captain from the position, at the discretion of the Fire Chief and with the approval of the Board of Discipline and Review.
